life: They Got Us All F*cked Up
Years of institutionalized racism, segregation, inequitable treatment and opportunity and folks expect a healing for an entire race of people in a fraction of the time it took to change their entire being here in the US. So many people want to pretend like Jim Crow was ages ago. I don't know about you, but my parents experienced it. Neither is older than 50. And yet, the overarching explanation against HBCUs is "Get over it. Things are better now. You can go anywhere you want to go..." First, that's not true for every black American. All of us can't go wherever we want to go, when we want to go. Second, even if it were true, do you expect generations of discrimination to be forgotten that easily? Cast aside like it never happened? A recent article said HBCUs are the last vestiges of separate but equal. Wrong. HBCUs not having equitable funding is a lasting vestige. You set up a school for marginalized citizens, provide second class support, and despite seeing its miraculous output from graduates tell us, "its not enough. Maybe you guys should merge." Until public HBCUs get as much funding as their PWI (predominately white institute) counterparts there should never be a merger discussion. And what states like LA, MS, and GA are preparing to face if they keep pushing merger talk is the very real possibility of lawsuits from students at those neglected HBCUs for not receiving fair treatment by state law. Mississippi already had to come up off of $500 mil for ignoring its HBCUs, and they want badly to get out if it now in tough times. The same will happen in Louisiana, Georgia, Texas and every place where people think its okay to mess with our schools. States cannot create a school to meet a mission-based purpose, underfund the purpose and deem that it can't be salvaged. States cannot have flagship PWIs that continue to underadmit minorities and say that opportunities are the same for all. States cant underfund secondary education, then seek to eliminate the only schools capable of giving those students a fighting chance at life. It's amazing sometimes how people totally miss the psychology behind racism, particularly in the discussion on HBCUs.
